GE funds to boost downtown
The Connecticut Housing Finance Authority has received three proposals for changing the face of downtown Bridgeport with the help of an unprecedented $25 million investment from General Electric Co. The individual projects are in different areas downtown, including a desolate section of Main Street; the southeast corner of State Street and Lafayette Boulevard, and the now-vacant site of the former Pequonnock Apartments adjacent to the ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Bridgeport metro area tops  nation in terms of productivity
Until recently, the ability to compare the productivity of one metropolitan area to another was difficult, if not impossible. This fall, however, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis introduced a new statistic: gross domestic product (GDP) by metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Its debut has made it possible to compare and rank metropolitan areas by their per capita productivity and economic output, and to analyze the economic growth rate of an MSA.

Last month, the city announced its selection of two prominent companies to build a $222 million mixed-use project on a vacant 11-acre site just south of Interstate 95. They are Vornado Realty Trust, a large publicly traded real estate investment trust that owns or manages more than 56 million square feet of commercial space, and Canyon-Johnson Urban Funds of Beverly Hills, a private equity fund that has invested nearly $1 billion across the country, focusing on densely populated areas with many minority residents.

Two national development teams with pro athlete star power — one has Johnson in its executive lineup and the other has Staubach — have filed competing proposals to transform the former Pequonnock Apartments site into a mix of apartments, stores, hotel rooms, offices, restaurants and movie theaters.
